"I began my career writing stories that
illuminated a place, person, or time," says Illume
principal Jonelle Kearney. "I still follow this
passion. We all need positive stories, almost like
we need good teachers; and these stories are
everywhere, even in dark times."
For example, in one of her first PR jobs at an
Oregon resort, she found a hidden gem in a
70-year-old pool repairman. He was half Sioux
and had grown up on an Indian reservation in
traditional Native American style. The story she
wrote about him for the corporate newsletter
(which she also designed) won an Oregon Press
Women award for best feature. It also gained her
added trust from her supervisors, and regard from
the press with whom she shared other intriguing
story ideas.
